Stephano's Wine Jug

Designed off of the idea that Stephano make/found the jug on the island after being shipwrecked and is using it as a portable bottle for his alcohol. It is styled liked he made it from part of a tree and used other materials from the island such as rope and vines with leaves to help hold it together.

The base of the jug is made from rigid foam insulation which was caved into the shape of the jug. It was then covered with paper mache and burlap and painted. The handle is bent PVC pipe and rope and fake leaves and vines were added to finish it off.

Table Onstage Full of Food

Banquet table

The banquet table had to be designed in a way that it could be brought on stage full of food and then have the food disappear on stage like magic. This was achieved by designing it with the inner part being able to flip, similar to that of a combination pool/air hockey table. The table is brought onstage with the food. During the scene, Ariel pushes on one edge of the table which causes the middle of the table to flip to the empty side.

Sound Effect Setup in Pit

Live Sound Effects

For our production, the director wanted to incorporate live sound effects. Two different live mechanical sound effect machines that were built were rain sticks and a wind machine. They were both used at the beginning of the show to represent the storm that causes them all to be shipwrecked on the island. All of these sound effects were used in the pit of our theatre.

Rain Stick

Rain sticks were designed to match look of the rest of the props, using the same color palate, rope, and vines and leaves. They were created from ABS pipe which has different sizes screws drilled into the pipe. The were filled with popcorn kernels and plastic bbs. The different use of screws and fill material resulted in a long lasting and varying sound. The pipe was then finished with a covering of  burlap with rope and vines with leaves.

Wind Machine

The wind machine is based off of online research. Using the research,  working drawings were made and the machine was built. The machine was built use wood and other material from our scene shop. The base and fabric were lightly painted to help it to match the rest of the props, but not so much that it affects the sound produced.
